Politics and baseball are running together--it seems almost obscene that the Iowa Caucus and New Hampshire primary may decide it ALL in a span of less than two weeks. Because they are now so close to California and other bigs, no one has time to raise further dough.

Baseball players play 162 hard charging games before they go to the post season--shouldn't we ask the same of our primary candidates in more than a handful of states?

In terms of dough, Mitt Romney and Rudy Giuliani are sitting prettiest for the Republicans, and trail the leading Democrats: Hillary Rodham Clinton and Barack Obama, who lead the pack with more than $20 million. They will need every dime to conquer the small states now in charge of much of our political process.

Seems sad and why I am more determined than ever to cover the elections from the VOTERS perspectives. WE count. We Matter. The big league players may dominate, but remember without us, they are not elected (unless Karl Rove and his henchmen come back to haunt us).

And as for baseball, what a thrill to see the replays of Colorado Rockies player Matt Holliday's slide into home base--by a fingernail ! He was safe. A reminder that the rhythms of Fall also belong to the baseball fan--true and slumming (more about Hillary, Bill Richardson and the vagaries of fanhood in another post). Can you be a fan of of more than one team? now there is a question. . .
