Ichiro Suzuki played for the Mariners for 11 and a half years--a Hall of Famer, 10 time Golden Glove Winner, 2533 hits, earning 200 in 10 seasons. He gave us hope when there was none. He played in superlatives.

Now he has asked for, and been traded to, the New York Yankees, a team at the top of the game.

He arrived as a superstar from Japan. In the American League, Ichiro became a superstar in Seattle. For Ichiro, New York is another field to conquer, another superlative at bat. He got a hit, stole a base and caught the last out as a freshly minted New York Yankee.

Not bad for a 38-year-old. He bows out to give the new team a chance to succeed and to challenge himself.

His tears at the press conference, his broad smile on the field speaks volumes. He leaves Seattle as a superstar, to play among superstars.

Timing is everything. Thanks, Ichiro, you are one of the few baseball players I have been privileged to watch and cheer for so long on my hometown team. I will miss the incredible grace you bring to the game, down to your old school, high water socks.

Farewell, Ichiro. New York is a great and a tough town.
Thanks for the memories.

And can we keep the Ichi-roll, please?
